Bio
Dwiki Dharmawan is an internationally acclaimed Indonesian pianist and composer, known for blending traditional archipelago sounds with jazz and world music. A co-founder of Krakatau, he has performed in 80+ countries and represents a powerful voice in global cultural dialogue.
Dwiki Dharmawan is widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most visionary and influential musical figures — a multi-genre keyboardist, composer, producer, and cultural ambassador whose work bridges tradition, modernity, and global dialogue.
With a career spanning more than four decades and performances in over 80 countries, Dwiki has established himself as a defining voice in contemporary world jazz. As co-founder of the legendary Indonesian band Krakatau, he has spent over three decades shaping a distinctive sound that fuses Indonesian traditional music — particularly the Gamelan tonal system — with jazz, rock, and progressive elements, creating a musical language that is both deeply rooted and globally resonant.
Born in Bandung, West Java, Dwiki’s early exposure to music was shaped by his proximity to a conservatory, where the sounds of dance and Gamelan formed his first sonic landscape. Classically trained on piano, he transitioned into jazz at the age of thirteen, drawing inspiration from icons such as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker — a shift that would ultimately define his artistic trajectory.
At the core of Dwiki’s artistry lies a philosophy: music as a bridge. His work transcends geography, reflecting a belief that cultural identity is not a boundary, but a meeting point. This vision is embodied in his long-running international collaborations and projects, including the “World Peace” ensembles and The Soul of Indonesia, where music becomes a vehicle for dialogue, empathy, and global consciousness.
A significant milestone in his international solo career came through his collaboration with Leonardo Pavkovic of MoonJune Records. Beginning with So Far, So Close (2015), Dwiki entered a new creative phase, working alongside world-renowned musicians such as Jerry Goodman, Jimmy Haslip, and Chad Wackerman.
His critically acclaimed album Pasar Klewer (2016) marked a breakthrough moment, earning 5-star reviews in DownBeat Magazine and widespread recognition from international critics, including All About Jazz. The album brought together leading figures from the London jazz scene such as Asaf Sirkis, Yaron Stavi, Mark Wingfield, and Nicolas Meier.
In Rumah Batu (2018), Dwiki expanded his sonic palette even further, collaborating with global luminaries including Nguyên Lê and Carles Benavent. The album stands as a landmark work — an intricate, genre-defying statement that merges progressive jazz, world music, and spiritual expression into a cohesive artistic vision.
Continuing his pursuit of new musical frontiers, Dwiki released Hari Ketiga (2020), a bold and experimental project featuring Markus Reuter and Boris Savoldelli, further solidifying his reputation as an artist unbound by convention.
His latest work, ANAGNORISIS (2026), recorded live in Athens, represents a profound artistic statement. Inspired by the Greek concept of “recognition” or “awakening,” the album embodies a dialogue between civilizations — Indonesia and Greece — brought to life through an international ensemble led by Gilad Atzmon. Critics across the United States and Europe have praised the album for its depth, originality, and cross-cultural narrative .
Beyond performance and recording, Dwiki’s work reflects a broader mission: music as soft power. As a peace and environmental advocate, he views music as a force capable of shaping consciousness, fostering empathy, and bridging cultural divides — a perspective that defines both his artistic output and his global engagements .
In Indonesia, Dwiki has played a pivotal leadership role in the music industry, serving as Chairman of the Indonesian Music Awards (AMI Awards) and contributing to the development of music rights organizations. Through the Farabi Music Education Institute, he has mentored generations of young musicians, ensuring the continuity of artistic excellence.
In 2026, Dwiki marks a major milestone with “The Musical Journey of Dwiki Dharmawan”, a 40-year retrospective concert at Ciputra Artpreneur, Jakarta, featuring leading Indonesian artists. In the same year, he continues his global presence with international performances, including appearances at major festivals such as the MoonJune Festival and collaborations across Europe and Latin America.
Dwiki Dharmawan remains an artist in constant motion — exploring, connecting, and redefining boundaries. For him, music is not merely sound; it is dialogue, identity, and a path toward shared humanity.
